Take The Lowest Place

Song Eight on The Calling of a Priest

Take the Lowest Place.  ( Luke 14:7-14). I wrote the chorus for “Take the Lowest Place” 29 August 2007, just a few days after I wrote “Dropsy” (for Luke 14:1-4).  The next day, the 30th, I wrote the verses.  I also wrote “I wouldn't want the Lord, who invited me in, to have to come to me and ‘move me down’ - it would be much better to take the lowest place and have to stay there!”  Taking the lowest place is not just what He calls us to, but it is part of His own calling.  (Phil. 2:1-11).  I wrote a “second chorus” where I changed the first one to He took the lowest place…etc. and then said that His cup is running over.  It made the song a bit unwieldy, so I dropped it - but it's true.  He is only asking us to do what He has already done for our sakes.  He has set us the perfect example of what it means to take the lowest place.  Taking the lowest place is the calling of a priest.

Take the Lowest Place Lyrics

Take the lowest place

nothing there to humiliate

can't go down any farther

even if you're never moved up

take the lowest place

befriend those who cannot repay

and your cup will run over

and blessings will fill you up

Humble yourself, whatever you do

and there will be no need to humble you

when you're down as low as you can go

there's nowhere to humble you to.

Take the lowest place

nothing there to humiliate

can't go down any farther

even if you're never moved up

take the lowest place

befriend those who cannot repay

and your cup will run over

and blessings will fill you up

Humble yourself, it's in your attitude

How you treat those who talk with you

you know if you try to have the edge

you may find that they're humbling you

Take the lowest place

nothing there to humiliate

can't go down any farther

even if you're never moved up

take the lowest place

befriend those who cannot repay

and your cup will run over

and blessings will fill you up

Make friends of the blind, poor, crippled and lame

Those from whom there's nothing to gain

you may find that the blind sees better than you

you may find that love loves best through pain

Take the lowest place

nothing there to humiliate

can't go down any farther

even if you're never moved up

take the lowest place

befriend those who cannot repay

and your cup will run over

and blessings will fill you up

(He who exalts himself will be humbled

but the humble will be lifted up.)
