Temple

Song six on The Calling of a Priest

Temple. (Mark 13:2-4)) I had already  spent several days in Mark 13:1-2, thinking about temples in general.  The day before (Feb. 10 2005)  I wrote what is now “Living Stones”, on my album After Six Days. On Feb. 11, 2005, I started wondering what Jesus was feeling and thinking as He sat there being questioned by the disciples, as He knew they weren't really understanding, as He knew what He would suffer in the days to come - and why.  If He mourned the temple and its fall,  if He thought of all the pain and the joy that was ahead for both Him and us - He had to think of it and feel - something. Did He feel that numbness that we get when something we dread is ahead? Was He looking forward to the day when everything would be different because of what He was about to do?  He wants to see us built into a living temple filled with His glory - where we can commune with Him freely and He with us.  And the way to this place leads through pain. For Him, and for all of us.  This was part of His calling - in order to bring us to that place where we will see Him “in a way we never have yet” - there was the night - and the cross - to get through first.

Temple Lyrics

You're sitting on a hill with the temple just opposite

and I wonder if You're mourning over it

and over what it represents to You?

And when Your friends come and ask,

“when will these things happen?”

I wonder if You're thinking that some of them will happen so soon?

And are You thinking of another place?

A place where they can see Your face

in a way they never have yet?

Are You thinking of another day?

When these things will all have passed away

along with the fears that now they can't forget?

Or are You thinking of the pain and sorrow that's coming?

Weeping may remain for a night

But joy comes in the morning

joy comes in the morning

Still there's the night to get through.

And You're full of hopes and plans for us

But there's a few things that need doing first

And that temple is over there, speaking to You

Well there's a curtain hanging there now

And You want to see it torn down

And You'll see it done before this week is through

And are You thinking of another place?

A place where we can see Your face

in a way we never have yet?

Are You thinking of another day?

When these things will all have passed away

along with the fears that now we can't forget?

Or are You thinking of the pain and sorrow that's coming?

Weeping may remain for a night

But joy comes in the morning

joy comes in the morning

Still there's the night to get through.

And we keep asking for signs that these things are happening

But they've been happening since the beginning

All around us they're being fulfilled

And we're missing You in the midst of it

You're sitting with the temple just opposite

We speak of one while the Other stands so near

Still You tell them, what they want to hear

And are You thinking of another place?

A place where we can see Your face

in a way we never have yet?

Are You thinking of another day?

When these things will all have passed away

along with the fears that now we can't forget?

Or are You thinking of the pain and sorrow that's coming?

Weeping may remain for a night

But joy comes in the morning

joy comes in the morning

joy comes in the morning

Still there's the night to get through.

And You're stitting on a hill with the temple just opposite

and I wonder if You're mourning over it?
